If free trade is so great, why are we losing jobs when many of our trading partners are gaining jobs? You may find the answer to that question in a book that I read not long ago; Free Trade Doesn’t Work: What Should Replace It and Why by Ian Fletcher. Michael Hughes provides an interview with the author on the Huffington Post that you may also find informative.
Free trade, as we have come to know it, has only been around for about 40 years. For most of our history the United States had a decidedly protectionist trade agenda. There is no correlation between our current free trade agenda and economic success. After reading the interview, you may find that Ian Fletcher is on to something and want to check out his book. It will challenge the politically correct view that aggressive Free trade is the natural and proper US trade policy.
